May is the beginning of graduation season. Global Girls is very proud, and a bit sad, to announce that three of our outstanding young ladies are graduating high school with honors and heading to college in the fall.
Ava and Jada were students in our Horace Mann Elementary School program. They came to the Grand Crossing Park Saturday session where we were an Arts Partner in Residence and brought Kiara to participate in our annual fashion show.
All three have traveled with our touring performance company in the United States and all have traveled abroad. Each attributes much of her focus, self discipline and work ethic to the opportunity to experience life outside of her community, getting to know other girls and working as peer mentors to help those girls find and use their voices.
Ava is graduating as a musical theatre major from the Chicago Academy of the Performing Arts. Jada leaves Perspectives High School with a business focus. Kiara, a dance major, graduates from University of Chicago Charter School Woodlawn. While we will miss them, we know they’ll return. Once a Global Girl, always a Global Girl.
They are leaving behind hundreds of girls in our school and community based programs who will carry on and rise through the ranks to assume the leadership position Ava, Jada and Kiara are vacating.
On another note, Global Girls is working feverishly to prepare for the Grenada Globes to visit Chicago in November for the second half of our arts exchange program. The 30 girls from three different schools who participated in our project, are continuing to meet as Global Girls arts groups with leadership from their school. The adults participated in our adult training and are well-equipped to continue the program. One group recently mounted a play which the girls created. The play was on verbal abuse and street harrassment.
In anticipation of the visit, Global Girls will host a "Grenada in Chicago Independence Day Party" in August. Independence Day is celebrated the enitre month of August in Grenada.
