In Zambia's Kawama Slum, where poverty and early marriage limit girls' futures, we are breaking the cycle through education, mentorship, and vocational training. This project empowers vulnerable girls to stay in school, gain life skills, and become advocates for their own rights and dignity.
Globally 650 million girls' below18 are child brides and still 117 nations allow child marriage. Despite 21%, being married off globally, 25 million have been prevented from getting into underage marriage. Though such efforts, the SDGs won't be achieved by 2030, as 120 million are anticipated to be married off and 1 in 3 won't step into secondary school, lack training, skills to fit in the job market and society. Currently, Zambia allows 1.9 million child marriage to frustrate girls' education.
Lotus Flower Community School cuts poverty cycle by providing literacy, health and empowerment to orphans and vulnerable children in a more than 35,000 population of Kawama Slum. We have rescued 223 girls from their early marriages, maintained 403 girl-orphans and 374 vulnerable children put and remained in school. The mentors counsel the girls on the importance of education, use of sanitary pads, reproduction and sex awareness, while others have been trained in tailoring, gardening and catering
Adding a year of secondary education to1000 girls associated with lower risks of marrying as a child and having a child before age 18, would have high chances of high esteem, low probabilities of living in an abusive marriage home, and will bear few children despite having enough resources and this would reduce generational poverty. We are expecting 850 girls to finish school become ambassadors to end child marriage, support and advocate for girl child rights including educational rights
