Back to School... Eventually

According to the World Bank Group, more than 50% of Nigerien children between the ages of 7 and 16 are out of school. RAIN's 170 women mentors and the over 800 elementary and middle school students they serve were ready and waiting to go back to school on October 2nd. Now, after recording-breaking flooding, the 2024-2025 school year is delayed country-wide.

The work these students and mentors do together matters. We know that because of girls like Ouma, in 8th grade:

Since the mentoring program came to our school, I’ve paid more attention to my studies because we have after-school classes and our mentors work with us on all kinds of topics like the importance of education and avoiding child marriage.

This is the first time we have a project like this and it’s helpful because we have a lot of challenges.

My mentor and teacher work together for our after-school lessons, which are free. I'd like to thank RAIN and my mentor because her watchful eye has helped me to continue my studies.

I will do everything in my power not to get married before I graduate.”

Consider giving, or asking friends and family to give today, so Ouma, and girls like her, are ready to hit the ground running when schools re-open on Monday, October 28th.

Education should be for everyone, including the 50% of Nigerien youth that are out of school. Ouma and her classmates know they are lucky. Let's make sure they have the support they need to stay in school and succeed there.

Girls like Ouma belong in school, not marriages.
