Mathare Girls / Q1 Report

By Oliver Wandi | Program Director

Mathare Girls
Mathare Girls

Mathare is an informal settlement situated on the outskirts of Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya. As is the case in most informal settlements, Mathare residents face acute shortage of basic services such as healthcare and education.

Three months ago representatives of a local community group called the Silver Bell Education Center approached OLE Kenya to presente the challenges that Mathare residents face, with a particular focus on education services available for girls. Over the past three years Mathare has seen considerable growth in what are known as "low fee" primary schools which, despite being deamed "low fee," are still expensive for local residents. Today, Mathare has just one public school and 25+ "low fee" private schools.

In order to provide additional educational support with a specific focus on girls, OLE Kenya has been working with the Silver Bell Education Center to deploy cummunity based learning coaches equiped with customized tablets that include learning resources designed to enhance literacy and numeracy amongst the girls in Mathare Slums. The program is held twice per week at the Silver Bell Education Center.

Challenges

To date the project has not generate sufficient donor support and has struggled to maintain its impact; visibility, and sustainability. Currently, the program is being supported by voluteer staff and by over-extending exisiting community center resources. OLE Kenya is continuing to ramp up our appeal and outreach in an effort to gain support so that the program can continue.
