Hello Friends,
First and foremost, I want to thank you for your continued support of our work. With your support, "Girls Leading Change" continues to grow and equip more and more adolescent girls and young women with critical knowledge, skills, and tools to lead healthy, choice-filled lives and advocate for broader access to comprehensive sexuality education in our community.
This year, we trained six more young women in sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and leadership, growing this group of inspiring young leaders and advocates to 30. Shortly after, they joined their peers to lead a training for 16 student leaders at a local school and co-organized a pregnancy prevention fair that reached 690 students from 1st to 9th grades. Additionally, they were invited to facilitate two more talks at other schools, engaging nearly 90 more students.
You may remember that previous cohorts of "Girls Leading Change" successfully drafted and advocated for the Municipal Public Policy on Comprehensive Sexuality Education, which finally passed in 2021 but has yet to be enacted three years later. In light of this, their efforts this year have focused on reigniting the conversation around this important policy.
With support from Antonia, a friend and founder of a like-minded youth organization in Honduras, they channeled their creativity and passion into researching and producing a documentary that highlights the current state of sexuality education in our community. Their research and documentary, shared with local authorities and key stakeholders, sparked interest in launching a pilot project next year to bring sexual education workshops to schools in high-risk communities—a critical first step on the path to broader change.
In a recent article by Antonia for More to Her Story, Keyrin, a 19-year-old sociology student and leader of this cohort of "Girls Leading Change", reflected on her experience: “Through participating in this project, I have learned so much about comprehensive sexuality education. I thought these topics were taboo and I shouldn’t talk about them, so participating in this project has shown me that these topics shouldn’t be taboo and we should be able to talk about them freely. We should be able to talk about our self-esteem, to know how to communicate well, to know about forms of contraception, about the causes and consequences of pregnancy; all of these things are important.”
Creating spaces where adolescent girls and young women and girls can learn about and stand up for their health and rights is central to our work and the future we envision. Your continued support is appreciated and and crucial for sustaining this positive momentum.
In appreciation,
Amanda
