Girls are engineering change!

By Christine Schindler | Founder

"You like soccer AND math?!" I overheard one student saying to a volunteer at a Girls Engineering Change session in Durham a few weeks ago. "That's awesome." One of my favorite thing about conducting these sessions is the constant ethusiasm I see when girls begin to see engineers in a whole new light, as people instead of old men in lab coats. Our voluneers are young, involved, college students who love to do many activites besides solving engineering homework problems. Watching young girls make these connections is incredibly exciting. In addition, I get to see the students understand what engineering really is. "Did you know that engineers make shampoo and skin?" I ask them as their eyes widen with confusion. "Let's talk about chemical engineers, and biomedical engineers..." The new thoughts these sessions open up for the participants makes me realize that regardless of whether or not the students actually pursue a career in engineering, from Girls Engineering Change they are thinking in many new ways.
