The Kasiisi Project recently completed a dormitory at Kasiisi Primary School for elementary school girls and boys. The dorm is a signfigant project, not only because of its scale, but also because the dormitory provides a safe place for young children to live, study, eat and have no commute to and from school! The children are able to focus on their studies. The dormitory is especially good for young girls who face lots of challenges while commuting many miles to school, these risks included older boys and men requesting sex in exchange for rides to school, money for books etc. Studies show for every year a girl stays in school her risks of HIV infection reduces 7% and her first pregnancy is delayed a year.
In February the Kasiisi Dormitory opened its second year of operation. In the first year boarders performed 16% better than day students in their primary leave exams. Enrollment has swelled to 73 children, 70% are girls.
