As the children entered into a new academic year in April 2020 amid COVID pandemic. Following the country-wide lockdown announced by the Indian Government on 25th March 2020, Rasta School was closed. Yet Rasta teachers made all efforts to be in contact with the children and their families. 30 to 40 % of the children had migrated to their respective villages, as their parents had no work. Rasta maintained contact with rest of the families, and organized feeding programmes for them, etc. During the lockdown period efforts were made for mobilization and follow up of children at different locations. The Online Classes (WhatsApp video calling/sharing worksheets and other learning materials via WhatsApp/ taught via phone calling to children who have basic phone) were conducted by way of Virtual classes in place of class room teaching .
The children were taught by way of Virtual Classes and given Classwork and homework via WhatsApp or/and phone calls. The classes were monitored by the Principal and Vice Principal of the School, and feedback for further correction was given accordingly. The parents had given positive feedback ofthe Online Classes. The Annual Academic Planner, both Class-wise and Subject-wise, for the next session was prepared by the teachers. Besides, The Annual Activity Calendar including various co-curricular activities, celebration of important days and festivals, examination schedules etc. was prepared .
The teachers are now more aware of the use of technology to teach children. Gradually majority of the children remaining in the area have been contacted by follow up over phone and teaching learning activity and other awareness activities. The children participated in celebrations which were organized in a small scale. Children have regularly attended classes who had Android or basic phonelasses. The capacity of the teachers have been enhanced to use technology to teaching children with this new approach. Regular follow up of children was done by phone calls. Other families of the society were contacted to know about the migration status of children. A data base was prepared of children, including their school going siblings, about their place of staying during the COVID – 19. Gradually most of the children were followed up. Lots of time was given to the children and parents to make them aware of the symptoms and safety measures to be taken to prevent COVID–19. Their parents were also contacted and counselled simultaneously. They were given emotional support to fight against Corona and to take care of health of the family members. Children, who have Android or basic phone, regularly attended classes. Children also participated in celebrations like World Environment Day, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, International Yoga Day etc.
