Summary

Childhood cancer is on the rise, with estimates indicating that one in 408 children will be diagnosed with cancer globally before the age of 15. CHOC aims to increase the survival rates of children with cancer to 60% by 2030 in South Africa. CHOC walks the lengthy treatment journey with beneficiaries by providing Psychosocial & Emotional Support, Practical Support: accommodation, transport, nutritional support, Carebags, Bereavement Financial Support serving 5979 beneficiaries annually.

Challenge

Childhood cancer is on the rise, with estimates indicating that one in 408 children will be diagnosed with cancer globally before the age of 15. In low & middle-income countries, the survival rate is between 15-20%, while in first-world countries it ranges from 80-90%. Key challenges affecting children's survival include later-stage diagnosis, lack of knowledge of the early warning signs of childhood cancer, & the deepened poverty families face when adhering to their child's lengthy treatment.

Solution

CHOC is dedicated to providing comprehensive support to children with cancer & their families. CHOC walks the journey with childhood cancer beneficiaries augmenting the medical treatment received in major cities and towns, alleviating the financial, emotional, and social challenges through: Psychological & Emotional Support, Practical Support: 13 child friendly houses serve as a home away from home for outpatient beneficiaries, nutrition, transportation, support & bereavement.

Long-Term Impact

Relieve the financial burden low-income families living far from treatment centres, to ensure no children are precluded from accessing & adhering to treatment. Reduced malnutrition for beneficiaries through the provision of three daily nutritionally meals. beneficiaries. Children & teens with cancer access & adhere to treatment in paediatric haematology & oncology units in hospitals in major centres, to decrease the morbidity & mortality rates & the suffering of children.
