GIFT THE GIFT OF EDUCATION TO AN UNDER-SERVED GIRL

 The Journey from Learning to Livelihood

For many tribal girls in Purulia, education often ends long before dreams can begin. Distance, poverty, family responsibilities, and limited access to career guidance force many young women to abandon their aspirations. Yet, when the right opportunity reaches them at the right time, their lives can change in extraordinary ways.

Asita Kumar (name changed), from Gobindapur village in Purulia, is one such young woman.

Born into a marginal financially vulnerable farming family, Asita grew up watching her parents struggle to support four children through seasonal agricultural income. Much of the family's hope rested on her elder sister, who worked as an Auxiliary Nursing Midwife (ANM) in a government hospital. In 2022, tragedy struck when her sister passed away unexpectedly, leaving the family emotionally devastated .

Despite the loss, Asita completed her Higher Secondary education with an impressive 85% marks and enrolled in English Honours at Balarampur College. However, studying English Literature from a Bengali-medium background without adequate academic support became increasingly challenging. At the same time, she realised that a conventional degree alone might not provide the financial security her family urgently needed.

Everything began to change when she gained access to a learning centre supported by Literacy India. There, she found something she had never experienced before—digital learning resources, academic mentoring, internet access, and career guidance that helped her see possibilities beyond her circumstances.

Remembering her late sister's dedication to healthcare, Asita decided to pursue nursing. She prepared for the West Bengal Government GNM Entrance Examination using digital learning platforms available at the centre while balancing a part-time teaching job at Baghmundi High School to support herself and her family. Managing work, studies, and household responsibilities required immense determination, but she remained focused on her goal.

Her perseverance paid off when she secured Rank 2422 in the West Bengal Government GNM Entrance Examination 2025 and earned admission to Purulia Deben Mahata Government Medical College & Hospital. The government-sponsored programme provides free tuition, hostel accommodation, and a paid internship, making professional education possible without adding to her family's financial burden.

Today, Asita is preparing for a career in nursing while helping support her parents and encouraging her younger sisters to continue their education. Her journey reflects far more than personal success—it represents what becomes possible when tribal girls are given access to learning, technology, guidance, and opportunities that match their aspirations.

In her village, Asita has become an inspiration for many young girls who once believed higher education and professional careers were beyond their reach. Her story shows that talent exists everywhere; what is often missing is opportunity. When that opportunity arrives, it can transform not just one life, but the future of an entire family and inspire a community to dream bigger.
