Aaradhya Bhoir underwent her first Cochlear Implant surgery last year in April 2017. There was significant progress seen in Aaradhya after that. She has started responding to all the sounds around her. She now understands all the common simple commands and questions. She now speaks quite a few meaningful words and attends regular Balwadi (Preschool) in her area. However parents realized that hearing only with one ear is not sufficient as Aaradhya finds it difficult to identify the direction of sounds and also faces difficulties in noisy situations. So they decided to do her Cochlear Implant surgery. After relentless efforts of almost one year to collect required resources, her second surgery was done on 8 th October 2018. Dhvani have been observing progress in Aaradhya after her switch on procedure that took place recently at Dhvani. Aaradhya has now emerging as confident listener and independent communicator as she is experiencing normal hearing in true sense as she can now hear with both her ears.
With this she has become the first ever girl child to undergo sequential bilateral cochlear implantation.
Hearing impairment or loss of hearing is one of the most prevalent congenital disabilities in India, with an estimated 8 in 1,000 infants born with moderate to profound hearing impairment. It is also recorded that over 27,000 children are born deaf every year in India.
Early identification and intervention have lifelong implications for the child’s understanding and use of language. Children like Aaradhya who are identified and receive appropriate intervention early are more likely to demonstrate language development within the normal range by the time they enter school.
