This case study is about the journey of Rani who was born and raised in a slum area on the outskirts of Hyderabad without the care and support of a father.
The story starts in 2014 when Rani joined Sphoorti after her relatives heard about Sphoorti.
When Rani was 6 months old, her father left the family for good. When her case was referred to Sphoorti, we talked to the family members and came to a conclusion that Rani deserved a chance in life and Sphoorti would help her through proper care and education.
Rani (14) hails from a slum settlement near Cherlapally, outskirts of Hyderabad. She never went to school while she was at home. Her mother is a daily wage laborer and her father deserted the family when Rani was a months old baby and has not returned since.
Rani came to Sphoorti in 2014. She has an elder sister Naga who also stays at Sphoorti
Rani had very poor nutrition levels, absolutely no hygiene and serious behavioral issues. She had untidy hair, skin infections and dental health was abysmal.
After two weeks of improving her health and appearance, we sent her to school in July 2014. Today, after 9 years she has moved to STD VIII and is doing well in studies. She also interacts well with her classmates in school and Sphoorti inmates of all ages.
We are sending her to a private school (English medium) and providing quality education. In addition, we are providing tuition support and counseling sessions for Rani and a few other children. This has been possible through the largesse of donors like GlobalGiving and conscious efforts of our staff members, volunteers and school teachers.
Rani says that she likes her Math teacher and wants to become a teacher when she grows up.
