Progress Report: Save Innocent Birds Trapped
Reporting Period: March 2025 – June 2025
Organization: Green Fund Initiative, New York, USA
Project Location: Bangladesh
Reported by: Anisur Rahman | Country Coordinator
Executive Summary
During the reporting period of March to June 2025, the "Save Innocent Birds Trapped in Deadly Nets" project continued its mission of rescuing birds and raising awareness among fish farmers, despite receiving no external funding. The Green Fund Initiative remains deeply committed to protecting wildlife, and thanks to the dedication of our volunteers, critical field activities persisted.
Over the past three months, our team has conducted awareness campaigns across several vulnerable regions and rescued more than 50 birds of different species trapped in fishing nets. The work was carried out entirely on a voluntary basis, demonstrating strong community ownership and commitment to conservation in the absence of financial support.
Key Activities and Accomplishments
Bird Rescue Missions:
Our volunteers rescued and treated over 50 birds, including multiple species of local and migratory birds entangled in fishing nets. Each rescue was followed by on-site treatment or transfer to a temporary care facility.
Community Awareness Campaigns:
Despite the lack of funds, awareness activities were carried out informally through local volunteer networks. Fish farmers were engaged in one-on-one conversations, and small group discussions were organized to sensitize them on the dangers posed by open netting systems.
Volunteer Commitment:
All activities were conducted by dedicated volunteers who contributed their time, skills, and in many cases, personal resources to sustain the project’s impact. Their tireless efforts have helped maintain momentum despite financial hardship.
Challenges Faced
No Funding Received:
No financial support was received during the reporting period, which hindered organized outreach events and the expansion of rehabilitation services.
Limited Medical Supplies:
The lack of funding also restricted access to adequate medical treatment and rehabilitation equipment for injured birds.
Persistent Risk Practices:
Some fish farmers continue to use harmful fishing nets, underscoring the need for deeper engagement and sustained behavioral change efforts.
Future Plans
Seek Urgent Funding:
Reinitiate fundraising efforts to support rescue equipment, medication, and establish a permanent rehabilitation center.
Expand Volunteer Network:
Recruit and train additional community volunteers, especially from local youth and schools.
Strengthen Local Partnerships:
Collaborate with local environmental groups, schools, and administrative bodies to scale awareness and prevention programs.
Introduce Low-Cost Bird-Safe Net Alternatives:
Identify and promote feasible alternatives to current fishing practices that endanger bird life.
Conclusion
While financial constraints have posed significant limitations, the Green Fund Initiative’s mission to protect birdlife in Bangladesh remains unwavering. This period has highlighted the power of community-driven conservation. With renewed funding and support, we aim to expand our efforts, reduce bird mortality, and build a sustainable model of coexistence between fish farming and bird conservation.
