Imagine a community where birds are regarded as adversaries. Hundreds of fish-eating birds from various species are consistently ensnared and killed as they become entangled in nets spread over ponds and wetlands by fish farmers. Lifeless birds are often suspended in nets, serving as a warning to their fellow avian. To conserve the bird species, this project in Bangladesh will train community volunteers to rescue the birds and aware the fish farmers, and establish a bird care center.
In the project area, many commercial fish-farmers use nets to protect their ponds from bird attacks, inadvertently turning them into lethal traps for various bird species, especially those that prey on fish. Despite the farmers' assertion of necessity, we contend that these nets ultimately convert ponds into bird graveyards, disrupting ecological balance. Shockingly, one fish farmer can inadvertently cause the deaths of 5-7 birds monthly, escalating to 500-700 birds per 100 farmers.
GFI and its partner will form a community volunteer group to rescue and treat birds trapped in fishing nets, training them for this task. Volunteers will raise awareness among fish farmers and mobilize the community. A bird care center will be set up for ongoing treatment and educate the locals. GFI plans to create a network with local organizations, schools, and government bodies to turn the project into a social movement
Over 100 fish farmers will become informed about bird conservation efforts. The community volunteer group, once established, will have a lasting impact on local conservation endeavors and will be capable of managing the bird care center independently. The network formed through this project will encourage institutions to take a more proactive role in bird conservation. These initiatives will collectively contribute to ecological balance and biodiversity preservation.
