A message from Kavya...

By Soph Stephens | Digital Manager

Hello! My name is Kavya, and my journey began with Karuna’s partner project - Amravati, where I participated in a training programme on gender equality. This workshop had a profound impact on me, reshaping my perspective on the roles of men and women and empowering me to stand by my beliefs rather than conforming to societal expectations.

Through this workshop, I gained clarity on the distinctions between gender and sex, and I developed a deeper understanding of the term patriarchy, which is deeply ingrained in our society. In my family, girls are often discouraged from pursuing education, with the prevailing belief that after the age of 18, they should marry. I too held this mindset, thinking that my education would ultimately lead to marriage, and I felt I had no choice but to comply with my parents' expectations.

However, the workshop instilled in me the confidence to assert my own desires. I realised I wanted to pursue further education and establish a career in the social field. After completing my graduation, my parents arranged a marriage for me without consulting my wishes. I firmly rejected this proposal, explaining that I wanted to continue my education and seek employment.

I am proud to be the first girl in my family to complete both my graduation and post-graduation. Shortly after, I learned about a job opening at the Amravati project. I was thrilled to receive a call confirming my selection. Having previously participated in their workshop, I was excited to work with this organisation.

This opportunity has given me hope and a chance to demonstrate to my family that I can be independent. I am witnessing a shift in their views, as they now recognise that girls, like boys, can earn and contribute to the household.

Thanks to your vital support, more girls like Kavya can create a ripple effect in their local communities, as we endeavour to create equal opportunities for all girls.
