The goal is to improve gender relations between men and women at households and community level in the suburbs of Juba County. The project targets 300 beneficiaries mainly women, community leaders, youth and media houses to become advocates for Gender equality in their communities. The funds will enable TIDE organise gender equality community engagement dialogues, and trainings on the importance of women involvement in governance and development in the family and community levels.
In Juba South Sudan, estimate 90% of women suffer serious discrimination in matters of property inheritance and ownership due to the male dominated cultural settings this is because customary law recognizes inheritance as patrilineal, with fathers passing property and titles to their sons and other male relatives than to women their wives except by few ethnic groups that recognize women rights in their communities. Article 16 of the Transitional Constitution of South Sudan opposes this directly
With this project, we will enhance the capacities of our beneficiaries who will be at the front seat to influence change. We will also nurture a fresh breed of gender equality activists and ambassadors both at the family, community and media houses who will continue to advocate on their rights for equality and inclusion in development programs. We will also inspire a generation of media personalities to run shows on gender equality and this improve the relationship between women and men.
The concept of creative arts as a tool for advocacy is yet to be exhausted by many in South Sudan. The gender engagement and empowerment-GEMPOWER is a creative means of leveraging the power of sports, arts and culture. This project will draw attention of 300 beneficiaries, community and cultural leaders. Our leadership, governance and human rights trainings will enhance the capacity of pressure groups and families with knowledge to become agents of change at the grassroots level.
