Because cement remains unavailable in Gaza, we are building Gaza Darna Transitional Shelters with materials available now. Construction is nearly completed for our first five 45 sq.m shelters- and 5 families are moving in! These private living spaces include indoor kitchen & bathroom, lockable doors, interlocking brick floors, and aluminum walls designed to keep out rodents and intruders. Help build Gaza Darna Shelters, a critical step beyond tent living- bigger, stronger, built to last longer.
In Gaza, nearly two million people were forced from their homes into fragile tents and tarps. Wind tears through the fabric, rain and sewage flood the ground, and mice and rats contaminate food and spread disease. Families need dry, secure shelter with privacy and sanitation- but how do you respond to these needs when so many families are in need? One starts with prototypes and moves forward, step by step, starting small where it counts.
Gaza Darna Shelters provide rapid shelter for displaced families that lasts for 3-5 years. Built with durable plastic "leather," they are weather-resistant, quick to assemble, giving immediate protection and stability. We inserted aluminum sheets deep into the ground to block rodents with insulation provided by an aesthetically pleasing canvas layer. Our first five in Nuseirat are connected to the city sewage system! We ask your help to pay for the first shelters, giving these families hope.
In 2011, Rebuilding Alliance pioneered a construction finance program for one Palestinian village in the West Bank when no banks offered loans- and that made all the difference. With our first Gaza Darna shelters, we're providing immediate, safe shelter that improves health and begins to restore dignity and stability during this crisis. To assure that Palestinian families can guide the restoration of their neighborhoods, we are exploring partnerships to offer revolving construction loans.
