Thank you for your support of the Gaza Emergency Appeal. Your kindness has allowed our cooking teams to expand their operations and provide meals to even more people in Gaza. Despite the challenges posed by the Rafah evacuation, our cooking teams continue to serve others, even while they are displaced.
Rafah was home to over one million displaced people, including two of Rebuilding Alliance’s Non-Governmental Organizations partners - the Women Programs Center-Rafah and Beesan Association - as well as many cooking teams. After the Rafah offensive, these cooking teams evacuated and relocated to central Gaza. Despite the challenges, they showed great resilience and reopened their kitchens.
Rebuilding Alliance’s Manager in Gaza, Rafeek, described the situation, "The situation in Rafah was frightening. A large number of people are now displaced. Those seeking refuge in Rafah were forced to move, and tents can be seen on both sides of the road. There were no tents, so our teams are making tents with wooden beams and plastic tarps. The demand for meals is high, and we are working on increasing the number of meals available," said Rafeek.
Our cooking teams started cooking in makeshift kitchens. Due to the closed borders, the cooking teams did their best to stretch the available supplies by adding vegetables bought in the local market. In early June, the World Food Programme provided a shipment of 116 metric tons of food supplies, including wheat flour, rice, oil, pasta, and tomato paste, etc. Rebuilding Alliance’s NGO partner, Youth Vision Society in the North, also received a huge shipment of 9 metric tons toward the end of May. Our partnership with the WFP provides access to food commodities even when the borders are closed.
YVS is currently running 2 kitchens. Al Basma Club for the Disabled is supervising 12, WPC-R 11, and Beesan 5, and there are 9 more neighborhood kitchens. Some are only bread kitchens while others serve hot meals.
The daily struggle of displacement weighs heavily on the people of Gaza. Belal, a kitchen lead, said, “Gaza is suffering from hunger, deprivation, and the hot weather.” Our cooking teams are living in tents and face uncertainty and immense challenges. Cooking is difficult due to the hot weather. Additionally, the smoke from wood burning stings the eyes. Yet, they remain devoted to feeding others.
Mrs. Najah, head of the WPC-R told us, “We face numerous challenges. While it is difficult to access certain areas, we manage to overcome the obstacles. Recently, I visited a camp where we distributed Uzi rice. A girl approached me and shared that she and her family really enjoyed the rice. Her words made me happy, knowing that the meal brought happiness to her family. During food distribution, I always make sure that little ones are served first, so they don't go without food.”
Before the Rafah Offensive
During the month of Ramadan, Rebuilding Alliance increased its cooking operations to provide nutritious meals for Palestinian families who were fasting. The cooking teams in Gaza worked tirelessly and served 120,000 people per day. A total of 2.4 million meals were served during Ramadan. They adjusted their schedules to cook near iftar time, ensuring fresh bread and providing meals in the mornings and evenings to accommodate fasting families. They dedicated long hours to serving others even while fasting and often had little food for themselves. On Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adha, Rebuilding Alliance's NGO partners delivered special treats to revive the traditional joy of the holidays for children and families.
“Families like our hot meals, they like that it tastes like home-cooked meals and is nutritious,” said Rafeek, Rebuilding Alliance’s Manager in Gaza.
On behalf of our cooking teams, and the families we serve, we thank you for supporting this vital hot meals program. With your generosity and the resilience of our cooking, we will continue feeding the displaced families in Gaza.
