Teach children and moms in El Hato, Guatemala, to garden, eat well, and protect their environment at the Garden of Hope. Malnutrition is common in El Hato. We seek to address this food insecurity by providing hands-on learning experiences that teach children and families how to grow vegetables, respect the environment, harvest, cook creatively and nutritiously, fertilize the soil naturally through composting, and value native plant species.
Malnutrition is common in El Hato, where the Garden of Hope is located. In surveys of program participants, we found that 77% do not have a stable income and 82% cannot buy meat or fish regularly.
We seek to address this food insecurity by providing hands-on learning experiences that teach how to grow vegetables, respect the environment, harvest, cook creatively and nutritiously, fertilize the soil naturally by composting, and value native plant species.
The long term goal for the community is to have improved nutrition. In addition, participants will have learned transferable skills related to gardening, soil management, composting, and protecting the environment for the future.
