Futbol Matters is a project that will create a safe space for 400 children to play football in Gustavo Madero, Mexico City. 40 young leaders will be trained in construction and management, supporting them to build the community football pitch and teach them skills to support their future employability. Already supported by Cityzens Giving, your donation will help Futbol Matters to continue the work of our young leaders and help even more young people in Mexico City.
Gustavo Madero has one of the highest rates of crime and violence in Mexico City. Issues such as school drop outs and unemployment compound this further, leaving many young people disenfranchised, unable to find work and turning to crime. As a result of this, the community is affected by insecurity and a lack of safe spaces to connect outside of their homes. This situation is even more dangerous for women and girls.
Futbol Matters seeks to address this engaging and training young leaders to plan, refurbish and manage their own soccer field in the heart of the community. This will be a safe space for young people to play football with a focus on fair play, inclusion and teamwork, empowering young people with the skills they need to flourish off the pitch.
The soccer field will be entirely open to the community and will be a sustainable platform for passion, education and community development. The project will enable diverse community leaders to form a local internal committee responsible for the ongoing maintenance and management of the facility. These spaces will be more than safe places to play sports - they will be lasting and tangible symbols of community strength and unity, centers of community and platforms for sustainable change.
