Summary

One in three American families struggle with diaper need, the lack of a sufficient supply of diapers to keep a baby clean, dry & healthy. A basic need of babies, diapers cannot be purchased with food stamps. Diaper banks help address diaper need by collecting, storing and distributing free diapers to families experiencing hardships. Administered by the National Diaper Bank Network, the micro-grants will help enhance the long-term growth and sustainability of individual diaper banks.

Challenge

Too many America families experience diaper need, a a hidden consequence of poverty. Government assistance programs, like food stamps and WIC, provide no funding for diapers, a basic necessity for babies. 5.6 million infants and toddlers live in low-income families. The National Diaper Bank Network, with over 200-member diaper banks, distributes more than 20 million diapers annually to families, with the goal of ensuring that every child in the U.S. has enough diapers to be clean, dry & health

Solution

Diaper banks require ongoing community support to sustain their mission of helping supply diapers to families in need. In addition to donations of diapers, diaper banks need financial assistance to pay for the costs of receiving, inventorying, warehousing and distributing diapers, as well as the general costs of running a business, including rent, utilities, web access, etc. The micro-grant initiative will help new and existing diaper banks with funds to expand their reach and impact.

Long-Term Impact

Since beginning operations in 2011, the National Diaper Bank Network has distributed more than 60 million diapers to member diaper banks. The network has grown to more than 200 active diaper banks servicing 5,678 local agencies and helping more than 1.2 million children stay clean, dry and healthy. The micro-grant initiative will provide funds to these nonprofit organizations so they can continue to grow and provide diapers to babies in need.
