Find treatment at the SHCH during COVID-19 Pandemic

By Sok Bouy | Communication and Development Manager

Vannak
Vannak

Vannak is a 41 years old single woman from Kampong Chhnang Province. She had a mastectomy at SHCH. She has worked at a Chines restaurant as a waitress for almost five years. She earns 180 $ per month. She lives at her workplace. Vannak noticed, she had a breast mass when she was 19 years old. She came for breast screening at our Women's clinic and did an ultrasound in the last seven years. When she found herself had beast mass, she tried to drink Khmer herbal tea (grass, root of trees etc) that she bought along the street. Her mass breast size is getting bigger. Vannak missed her follow-up at SHCH because she believes that drinking Khmer herbal tea and taking fiber tablets can help her reduce the risk of her mass breast size.

Last few months, She visited SHCH for a breast ultrasound, and due to her mass breast size being more prominent, our doctor suggests that she do breast surgery. She agreed, and we scheduled her one month from her visit date. Due to the Covid-19 community outbreak at our Surgical ward, our staff needs to do a covid-19 test and quarantine. We postponed her schedule until our surgeon doctors were free from quarantine. Vannak came again and did a covid-19 test for admission to our surgical ward. Unfortunately, she had positive Covid-19, so we sent her to the Covid-19 treatment center in Phnom Penh. After treating Covid-19, She had a successful breast operation at SHCH last week. She said, "my journey to find a treatment was difficult. I do not have Parents, my relative did not support me, I have covid-19 positive, and I have no income for sick leave. If I did not know the breast cancer program at SHCH my breast would get bigger and make me stressed about this problem. I am so thankful to doctors, staff, and donors who supported me and other patients free of charge.
