Safe Spaces, Steady Support for Girls in Barbados

By Alian Ollivierre | Project Lead

Over the last quarter, your support helped us do something deeply important for girls in Barbados: sustain safety, consistent spaces of care, connection, and development during a time when many young people continue to face instability at home and in their wider communities, due to the econmy.

Through I Am A Girl NGO’s ongoing work, donations to our emergency housing effort have helped us respond not only to immediate vulnerability from displacement, but also to the wider conditions that place girls at risk in the first place. Our organisation exists to inspire, empower, and provide opportunities for girls to lead, and our programming continues to be rooted in mentorship, leadership development, community support, and protection, with an aim of also prevention.

HOW WE SHOWED UP:

During this reporting period, a portion of project spending supported our girls' development through weekly sessions and workshops, both of which form part of the safe ecosystem we work hard to maintain around girls. While emergency support is often understood only in terms of crisis response, our experience on the ground continues to show that prevention, trusted relationships, and access to uplifting spaces are also critical forms of protection.

Our weekly club sessions give girls regular access to mentorship, sisterhood, life-building conversations, and positive structure. This aligns with our broader programme model, of meeting girls where they are at so crisis does not have to be the only time support is provided, through capacity-building activities, assessments, mentorship, and tailored development support for girls ages 5 to 18.

All these kinds of moments matter. They remind girls that they are seen, celebrated, and worthy of investment, especially when many are carrying burdens far beyond their years.

For the girls we serve, support is never just about a single event or activity. It is about helping them remain connected to a circle of care. It is about reducing isolation. It is about making sure that when a girl is navigating hardship, she still has somewhere positive to go, trusted adults to lean on, and a community that is actively reinforcing her value and potential. Through your giving, we were able to keep showing up in those ways this quarter, for more than 185 girls.

LESSONS LEARNED:

In 2026, one of the clearest and most urgent realities we have observed is the growing number of girls and families living on the brink of displacement has been due to the rising cost of living. Increased rent, higher utility bills, unstable employment, and reduced household income have placed many families under intense pressure, leaving little room to recover when even one unexpected expense or emergency arises.

What we have learned through this work is that housing insecurity rarely exists in isolation. It often comes alongside emotional distress, disrupted routines, reduced school engagement, and a deep sense of uncertainty for girls who are trying to navigate adolescence while their home environment feels increasingly fragile. We have also seen that early, community-based support matters a whole lot. These experiences continue to affirm for us that emergency support must be paired with consistent, dignity-centered programming that helps girls remain connected, supported, and seen, even in the face of growing instability.

SINCERE GRATITUDE:

We are especially grateful because this support helps us hold the line for girls whose needs are often layered. A girl facing housing insecurity or family instability may also need emotional support, mentoring, encouragement, and safe developmental spaces that strengthen her confidence and decision-making. By investing in the wider support system around girls, donors, like you, are helping us protect dignity, foster resilience, and keep doors open to both immediate and longer-term care.

Thank you for continuing to believe in the girls we serve. Your generosity does more than fund activities or direct support. It helps create safety, belonging, and possibility. As we look ahead, we hope you will continue standing with us so that more girls can access the support, stability, and sisterhood they deserve.

SOME NEXT STEPS:

Your continued support helps us remain responsive when girls need us most. Whether by giving again, sharing this project with someone in your network, or helping us amplify our mission, you become part of the protective community helping girls in Barbados move from vulnerability toward greater safety and strength.

Thank you again for being apart of our Champions of Impact!
