Since the start of the pandemic, our partners AMBAS, Red COMAL, and The Mangrove Association have accomplished so much to protect the health, safety, and food security of thousands of people through their dedicated, community-led responses to this disaster. With your contributions, they have set up sanitation stations, provided PPE and cleaning supplies, conducted food security studies, distributed emergency food kits and vegetable seedlings, built home gardens and chicken coops, and kept their communities connected and informed. Your support has gone straight towards helping families survive. But their work isn’t over yet.
Even as some countries begin to reopen, COVID-19 continues to severely impact Central America. The negative effects of the novel coronavirus pandemic will be seen long after curfews are over. Food security, economic stability, and community health are anticipated to have enduring problems. El Salvador began Phase 1 of its months-long reopening plan on June 17th, allowing some businesses to resume operations and loosening the stranglehold the government has kept on individual movement through "sanitary fences." But, in areas like Barra de Santiago, a reduced curfew doesn't mean a return to regular income, as many residents depend on tourism to survive. Markets throughout Latin America, which are vital for income and food security, face unique challenges as cases rise. The few farmers who are able to grow crops have nowhere to sell their goods and no neighbors who can afford to buy them. People working in the informal sector who live day-to-day are still struggling to feed their families at all. It is abundantly clear that continued investment in community agriculture and emergency provisions is necessary to combat the ongoing hunger crisis. Our partners are prepared to continue support for their communities as they recover and heal, but this is not a fight that can be won alone.
Please continue supporting these communities as they navigate an ever-changing landscape by making a gift today. To help sustain these organizations in the months to come, consider setting your gift to recur monthly. Your ongoing contribution to our COVID-19 campaign will help grassroots organizations continue to provide necessary relief to vulnerable families.
