Fund Community Rehabilitation Workers in Uganda

It's been a busy few months for our East Africa Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) teams. Following the opening of our new Kajo-Keji clinic in South Sudan, the newly created CBR team, based out of the clinic, have been working hard to build connections in the community. Extending the reach of the Uganda centre, the Kajo-Keji team have been distributing wheelchairs to those they have identified in their initial asessments. Inceasing access to mobility resources will be an important aspect of the South Sudan CBR work so we're delighted to see the team hitting the ground running with this project.

The Uganda based CBR team has just kicked off a significant wheelchair repairs project in partnership with Walkabout Foundation. Thanks to a supply of spare parts and training, the team are now embarking on a project to ensure chairs distrbuted in 2021/22 receive the necessary repairs to keep them effective and correctly fitted to the beneficairy. The conditions and terrain in the refugee settlements give the chairs a hard life so regular repairs are a vital part of our work to ensure long-term support for persons with disabilities.

In one example, pictured below, a young person with hydrocephalus, living in BidiBidi and who received an adapted chair in 2021, benefitted from some repairs and changes to the fitment of the chair. It is now fitted to their current size and ready for more years of use.  

Alongside all of this, the Uganda team have also been distributing food aid as part of our ongoing nutrition project. This is aimed at supporting the most vulnerable refugee households with a programme or food distributions, and the supply of seeds, tools and training to encourage a sustainable food supply for vulnerable refugees.
