Summary

Warrior Canine Connection (WCC) supports recovering combat Veterans and their families through the healing power of dogs. WCC enlists Service Members and Veterans suffering from symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress (PTS) and Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) in the critical mission of training service dogs for their fellow wounded Warriors with physical disabilities. These highly skilled, Warrior-trained service dogs are placed with Veterans at no cost.

Challenge

WCC's service dog training therapy program is designed to specifically address the symptoms of combat stress of returning Warriors, such as isolation, emotional numbness and re-experiencing. Warriors participating in the program have reported that using positive emotions to praise their dogs has the added benefit of significantly improved family dynamics. There is currently a critical shortage of highly skilled service dogs for Veterans with disabilities.

Solution

WCC's therapeutic service dog training program is based on the Warrior Ethos of caring for your brothers and sisters in arms, and provides recovering combat Veterans with a sense of purpose and a continuing mission while they are in treatment at Department of Defense (DOD) and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical facilities. These highly skilled service dogs are then placed as lifelong partners with Veterans with disabilities at no cost.

Long-Term Impact

Canine Connection Therapy helps recovering Warriors reconnect with life, their families, their communities, and each other. WCC also provides a vocational path for Warriors who wish to become service dog trainers. The WCC program produces highly skilled service dogs that provide years of mobility and social support to Veterans with disabilities.
