With your support, the Nasio Trust has helped establish over 100 kitchen gardens in the rural community in Mumias West Sub County. Kitchen Gardens are an innovative and sustainable way of making families more food secure and also giving them a source of income.
Kitchen gardens have been particularly impactful for women and children who regularly participate in our Porridge Kitchen and Young Farmers Clubs programmes. The porridge kitchen is a safe space for mothers and children affected by malnutrition to have a cup of porridge fortified with spirulina and get a health check up. As a means of empowering the mothers and children to maintain healthy nutritional and caloric intake while at home, our community livelihoods team has established 30 kitchen gardens for all 30 mothers.
Kitchen gardening has also been extremely engaging activity for 10 Young Farmers Clubs established in schools across Mumias West. These gardens are maintained and set-up within school premises and managed by students trained by Nasio's staff. The students have gained essential skills suited to their local environment and have managed to set up gardens at their own homes as well.
