Planting trees on an ever-evolving island

By Lizzy Rainey | Development Manager

Dear friends,

The Big Island of Hawaii is a landscape defined by perpetual transformation. As the island continues to experience volcanic activity and eruptions that reshape the earth, we are reminded of nature's raw power and incredible resilience. In Hawaiian tradition, this continuous cycle of land creation and renewal is deeply revered.

Following the movement of lava and these natural cycles of renewal, we are continuing our work on the island in this very vein of planting and restoration. Historically, resilient pioneer species like ‘ohi‘a lehua emerge first, often planted alongside traditional staples like coconut trees to anchor the soil and bring the land back to life. Building on this legacy, planting food-producing trees is critical for island food sovereignty and honors Hawaiian traditions of caring for the land and lava.

Thanks to your support, we are honored to continue this vital work across island communities. Bringing food forests and fruit trees to the Big Island provides vital nourishment, strengthens local food security, and nurtures a deep, enduring connection to the environment.

A huge thank you to everyone who makes our ongoing work possible. If you are able, a donation toward planting and maintaining resilient island orchards would be deeply appreciated as we keep renewing the land together!

To a fruitful and resilient season ahead,

The FTPF Team
