Star Fruit Trees

By Lee Koelzer | Director

Star fruit is one of the fruit trees we distribute to villagers and our partners. It is a fascinating tropical fruit with a tartly sweet taste and a juicy yet rubbery texture. When you slice the fruit crosswise it creates small stars which can be used to decorate salads, cocktail glasses, frozen into exotic ice cubes, eaten fresh, or really anything else you can imagine.

The tree takes approximately three years to start fruiting, and after that can be harvested twice per year. It requires no pesticides as insects find the fruit’s acidity daunting, and simple organic manure is sufficient fertilizer.

It is full of vitamin C, vitamin B complex, fiber, and antioxidants. So if the beneficiary’s family decides to simply eat the fruit, then FANTASTIC! It is good and good for them. Alternately they can sell them on a local market, or sell them to us and we will in turn sell them at our buying price (after all we are an empowerment organization and it is important that farmers make a decent amount of money from their harvest) to local Ugandan jam makers.

We are currently the only commercial growers of star fruit in Uganda, and our supply cannot meet the demand.  For this reason we know that star fruit is a cash crop that people can grow and utilize to help raise themselves out of poverty.

Each star fruit tree costs about $0.70 and we would like to distribute 1000 of them to villagers near our farm. That is a $700 goal for this project and every penny you contribute will bring us closer to that goal.

Thank you for your continued support.
