Be Enriched and its partners are converting a doubledecker bus into a mobile fruit and veg market, bringing affordable food to areas of high need in Wandsworth. The bus will also have an affordable cafe and will offer programming for the community, including cooking classes, advice, nutrition education, and community events.
Although there are food shops in the target locations for this project, the local food shops that exist are expensive and out of reach for low income families. Those with limited access to healthy and affordable food often choose cheaper, more filling foods over fruit and vegetables, often to the detriment of their health. A 2018 Cambridge University study found that people on low-incomes who live furthest from their supermarket were more likely to be obese that those who live close by.
The bus will increase access to healthy and affordable food in the most deprived areas of Wandsworth. Community members will have increased knowledge of nutrition, healthy cooking, and food growing as well as increased access to services and community resources that provide financial crisis support and advice.
This project will increase access to healthy and affordable food, and will improve the nutrition knowledge and cooking skills of the local community members, leading to improved health and well-being.
