From School to the Future: STEAM Education for Life is a project by Fundacion Bringas-Haghenbeck that delivers extracurricular workshops in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) to over 800 children and youth in Iztapalapa, one of Mexico City's most underserved areas. Through creative, hands-on and collaborative learning, we aim to strengthen their skills, self-esteem, and community engagement, promoting holistic development and opening pathways to a brighter future.
In Iztapalapa, Mexico City, primary school children face structural vulnerabilities such as lack of home internet access, limited exposure to science and technology, low educational levels among caregivers, and entrenched gender stereotypes. These barriers hinder the development of 21st-century skills, deepening educational and digital divides.
The project provides a practical and context-sensitive educational intervention through STEAM workshops and Robolution kits, enabling learning through play, construction, and problem-solving. It also integrates the Makerteka educational platform to ensure pedagogical continuity, teacher training, and the replicability of the model across other FBH schools and community centers.
The project has high potential for long-term impact by strengthening scientific, technical, and creative skills from early childhood, with a special focus on girls. Integration with Makerteka ensures sustained and scalable learning over time, promoting educational equity and positioning FBH as a benchmark in STEAM education for vulnerable communities.
