Behavior modification through Child Friendly Spaces (Name Changed)
The children attending the Child Friendly spaces, undergo a gradual behaviour modification while attending the classes. Most of them are either drop-outs from schools or have never attended school. When they initially start coming to classes, they are quite untidy and not properly dressed up. They lack the basic sense of health and hygiene. The teachers tell them the importance of cutting nails, washing hand before eating and after using toilets. Health and hygiene related issues are also discussed during the monthly parent’s teachers meeting. The parents are explained about the importance of education, health, cleanliness of house and surroundings and imbibing good habits like washing hands, oiling hair, daily bath and cleaning teeth etc. After attending the classes in a disciplined manner for few months, they start following the schedule and get used to the daily routine. They start coming to school in a neat and tidy manner, which is result of the teacher and parental effort. To support the behavior modification among children, each of the classes have combs, mirror, hair oil, soaps are kept accessible to the children and parents. Moreover, Approach Foundation, Ahmedabad which has collaborated with Saath, organises diverse extra-curricular activities for every Child friendly space on every weekend. These efforts put together facilitates in the behavior modification of the children. The impact of the interventions has been such that the children have become more regular, follow the schedule of the classes and the hygienic practices. One such case of behavior modification has been noticed at the Le Zerdin, where a girl named Anita has undergone a lot of change after attending CFS classes.
Anita Singh, (Name Changed) 10 years old is a native of Masliya Jheel, Madhya Pradesh. Her father’s name is Nangar Singh and mother’s name is Neeta. Both of them are construction worker at the Le Zerdin site. They migrated to Ahmedabad from Masliya Jheel 6 months back in search for manual work. Anita had studied till class 3rd in her village and thereafter had to drop-out of school due to her family’s migration. She can read and write to some extent. She has two infants to manage, who are her uncle’s children. The uncle’s family has also migrated along with them and engaged in the construction work. Since there is no one else to take care of the infants, the uncle depends on Anita for baby-sitting of his children. Anita has not been very supportive to her uncle, and she charges a fees for taking care of the children. She got enrolled at the CFS centre started in December, 2015 by Saath with the support of developer. Prior to the classes started in December,2015, Anita used to roam around at the site with the other children of the construction workers. The whole day long the children, played in the mud and used to regularly fall sick due to one illness or other. Anita was a very notorious girl, who did not heed to any instructions and did not allow other children to attend CFS classes. The teacher had to initially make a lot of effort to bring them to the centre and convince the other children to the centre for the classes.
The infants were also enrolled for the classes, where many other little ones are sheltered while their parents are gone for work. Thus Anita now was not solely responsible for the baby-sitting of the two little cousins, as the teacher was there to take care of them. Instead of that she is now learning English basics, Hindi and Mathematics. She can even write a bit and has been picking up more after coming to CFS. At the time of her enrollment to the classes, her weight and height was measured as a part of the enrollment process. She weighed 24 Kgs at that time, which was below the desired weight, thus was considered as Malnourished. After attending the classes for more than 2 months, there has been an increase of 6 Kgs, and she is now a healthy child. The teacher at CFS, Rehana ben has been counseling the girl since day one, as she was not cooperating with the class room sessions. She used to remain absent from classes initially and also stop others from coming. Gradually she has understood that her behaviour was unacceptable and harming her friends and own siblings. She has become more regular and now she is more cooperative with the teacher. The teacher has also told her not to charge fees from her uncle for baby-sitting of the children, since they are her cousin brother and sister. Anita is gradually understanding the importance of education, after attending CFS classes. She has promised the teacher that she would now motivate more and more children on the construction site to attend the CFS classes, rather than stop them from attending. Thus we see behavior modelling and health improvement of the child by the efforts of the project intervention within few months.
CHALLENGES
ü The attrition rates of students is high
ü Parents don’t think it’s important for their child to attend such activity classes
ü They think they are losing household income if children go to school
As the children are from Migrant families, it becomes difficult track the kids once they move to different sites
ü Stationary, Toys, Teacher Expenses, Snacks are becoming costlier.
ü Regular funding is not there for this program
