Well, COVID-19 really changed the landscape for school food, didn't it?
This spring, we were gearing up to introduce another wave of kids to fresh, NC grown food through cafeteria-based taste tests. Then, just in time for spring break, schools closed to reduce the spread of the virus. And in Durham (as in many other communities), they have yet to re-open for in-person instruction.
We've been busy though.
Kids depend on school food -- now more than ever -- so Farmer Foodshare quickly pivoted. In partnership with Durham FEAST, a coalition of local organizations, foundations, restaurants, and local government partners, Farmer Foodshare delivered $188,000 worth of fresh produce between March and May to Durham families whose kids were receiving emergency meals. We also began serving serving families in adjacent school districts -- Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools and Orange County Schools -- each week.
Then summer kicked in, and with it: summer feeding programs. Along with fresh food, we introduced a new way for families who were spending a lot more time at home to eat well and exercise together. The EAT-NC newsletters -- which are jointly created with the DPS Hub Farm, Interfaith Food Shuttle, NC Cooperative Extension, DINE, and FoodCorps -- provide a weekly source of activities to help kids learn and stay active. You can download them too. Kids also had the chance to receive seed kits to grow (and sample!) their own microgreens at home!
And now, school's back in session -- virtually. We won't be able to do taste tests for the foreseeable future, and we SO miss their laughter and stories. But your support is still providing kids with access to fresh, nutritious, NC-grown produce. And that's exactly what they need right now.
