Free Veterinary Clinics in Rural Oaxaca

Summary

In rural Oaxaca, one in four people tests positive for intestinal parasites every year - and uncontrolled stray animal populations are a primary driver. For less than $20 per animal, GOPAW delivers free sterilizations, vaccinations, and parasite treatments that protect entire communities. Help us build a healthier Oaxaca - for animals and the people who love them.

Challenge

In the rural communities of Oaxaca, Mexico, stray and free-roaming dogs and cats lack access to basic veterinary care, leading to rampant overpopulation and the spread of zoonotic disease. In our target communities, 25% of the human population tests positive for intestinal parasites annually, a rate directly tied to the lack of animal health infrastructure. This is not just an animal welfare issue - it is a public health emergency hiding in plain sight.

Solution

GOPAW delivers free mobile veterinary clinics across rural Oaxaca, providing sterilizations, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and parasite treatment for under $20 per animal. We train and employ local veterinary professionals, collect critical public health data, and run youth education programs that teach the next generation how to care for animals. Our semi-permanent presence in Oaxaca ensures lasting change, stable local employment, and a community equipped to sustain this work.

Long-Term Impact

With $100,000, GOPAW will conduct multiple full-scale mobile clinic campaigns across Oaxaca, sterilize and vaccinate thousands of animals, train and pay local veterinary staff for a full year, and deliver youth education programming to schools throughout the region. Long-term, this builds the operational infrastructure to expand GOPAW's model to underserved regions across the globe, reducing zoonotic disease rates and creating a replicable blueprint for community-driven animal and public health.
