Our Lifesaving Vehicle Needs to Be Replaced

By Maritza Ambrosio Fernandez | Roject Leader

Every child deserves the opportunity to reach lifesaving cancer treatment safely, with dignity, and on time. That simple mission has always been the heart of Manos Unidas por Coatzacoalcos.

For more than fourteen years, our transportation program has ensured that children and adolescents with cancer from rural and underserved communities in southern Veracruz can continue their medical treatment, regardless of their family's financial situation. While transportation may seem like a basic need, for many of the families we serve, it is the difference between receiving treatment or missing an appointment that could affect a child's recovery.

This year, we have continued providing hundreds of free rides to hospitals and treatment centers, accompanying families during one of the most difficult moments of their lives. Every journey represents far more than transportation—it represents hope, continuity of care, and the reassurance that no family has to face this journey alone.

Interestingly, our Playroom Project has received much more support than our transportation program. We are deeply grateful for every contribution to the Playroom, as it brings comfort and joy to children during treatment. However, transportation remains the foundation of everything we do. Without a safe ride to the hospital, children cannot receive chemotherapy, medical consultations, laboratory tests, or follow-up care. Simply put, without transportation, there is no treatment.

Today, our greatest challenge is replacing our aging vehicle. Years of constant use on long routes have taken their toll, and the need for a new vehicle has never been more urgent.

Having a dedicated vehicle exclusively for children with cancer makes an enormous difference. Instead of relying on multiple public buses, long waiting times, crowded conditions, and physically exhausting trips, children can travel safely, comfortably, and directly to their appointments. Many of them have weakened immune systems due to chemotherapy, making crowded public transportation an additional health risk. Our vehicle also allows parents to focus on caring for their child instead of worrying about transportation logistics or finding money for bus fares.

Every kilometer we travel represents another child who did not have to miss treatment. Every ride helps reduce stress for families already facing extraordinary challenges. Every donation brings us one step closer to replacing the vehicle that has faithfully served thousands of children over the years.

Thank you for believing that something as simple as a ride can save a life. Your support helps ensure that children with cancer can continue reaching the treatment they need—and the future they deserve.
