Teach For Bulgaria Quarterly Report

By Anelia Todorova | External Partnership Manager

Dear supporters, I am glad to share with you last updates on our work in the past quarter. Probably one of the key highlight is that we started 2014/2015 school year with 88 teachers reaching more than 6000 children from low-income communicates across Central and Western Bulgaria. Needless to say that our teachers are fully determined to chance the life trajectory of their students and have already done the first steps towards this direction. For example during the first weeks of the school year Valeria Ivanova, a teacher in 40 High School in Sofia, has been working with her 2nd grade students on developing their personal visions for the school year. The students, with the guidance of Valeria, created visions for what they want to accomplish by the end of second grade. A proof that our teachers change not only lives but influence the school culture and communities where they serve comes from the village of Oreshene, Lovech region. The local school is implementing an innovative way for establishing classroom culture and discipline, taking an example from second year Teach For Bulgaria teacher, Yoana Slavova. Since last year Yoana has used a technique of student behavior tracking in all of her classes. The goal is for classes to compete against each other by gathering points for good behavior. Each class selects one name, like in the popular children book series,Harry Potter. Yoana's colleagues noticed the efficacy of this approach, and now the system has been expanded school wide to great effect. Already one of the traditionally most difficult classes in terms of behavior has reached 3rd place in the competition. Students are also assigned the responsibility of tracking their own behavior, and despite initial concerns that they would lie or not take the responsibility seriously, the students have taken ownership of the process with no issues. Once again I would like to thank you for your support and encourage you to see the attached detailed report for the past quarter. Best, Anelia Todorova External Partnership Manager
