Summary

The Academy provides free summer education to 500 kids from low income communities in Sofia. The goal is to help children with less opportunities compensate their academic deficiencies, show them that learning can be fun and motivate them to achieve better results. Your support will cover all costs related to the organization and execution of the Academy - food, training materials, transportation for the kids, etc. as well as all the costs related to teachers training.

Challenge

In Bulgaria, children from minorities and low-income families underperform in school. Bulgaria has the largest gap between the students with highest and lowest results (PISA), and the highest school dropout rate in Europe - 21.5% (Eurostat). Poorer students have less opportunities to build up on knowledge and develop skills through meaningful activities during the summer. The Summer Academy provides such opportunities for kids ages 7-18.

Solution

TFB teachers are motivated by the belief in the success of every child. The Summer Academy is part of their training and a way to structure learning plans according to students' needs, allowing students to catch up and build up on knowledge and skills from the school year. Teachers design classes according to subject matter and integrate contemporary teaching approaches in order to reach all students and support them in reaching their potential.

Long-Term Impact

TFB believes that every child can succeed, if she/he is supported, motivated, and allowed access to diverse learning opportunities. By recruiting, training and supporting motivated professionals who become teachers in high-need schools, TFB injects new talent in the education sector, both directly in the form of human capital and through the sharing of developed best practices in teacher training and teaching approaches in the classroom.
