Summary

Parents of LGBTQ children serve as their first line of defense. Supporting parents through therapist-led educational sessions can help them better address their LGBTQ child's mental health needs. DYJEPREDHU will offer bi-monthly, therapist-facilitated virtual support groups for parents whose LGBTQ children are struggling with depression, anxiety, self-harm, eating disorders, or suicidal ideation. This project will benefit 384 parents and their 500 LGBTQ children each year.

Challenge

LGBTQ children are currently facing heightened mental health needs due to anti-LGBTQ legislation in force across the DRC. This situation, combined with the difficulty of obtaining therapeutic support for these children, has created a growing need for mental health education and support. In some regions, waiting times to see a specialist in LGBTQ issues can stretch into months. During this waiting period, when an LGBTQ child is in crisis, parents serve as the first line of support.

Solution

DYJEPREDHU has identified a need for therapist-led, bi-monthly support groups for parents whose LGBTQ children are dealing with depression, anxiety, self-harm, eating disorders, and suicidal ideation. These groups will focus on specific themes and provide parents with essential resources to advocate for their LGBTQ children's mental health.

Long-Term Impact

This project will reach 384 parents and their 500 LGBTQ children each year. It will provide parents with a supportive space to express their emotions, concerns, and experiences regarding the mental health needs of their LGBTQ children; it will increase knowledge and understanding of mental health issues affecting LGBTQ children, help develop coping strategies and self-care techniques for managing emotional distress, and foster resilience and emotional well-being among parents and their families.
