Kavitha grew up in a poor household where continuing her education beyond the 10th standard wasn’t possible. After marrying at 21 and returning to her village, she soon realised she wanted more than the life of a housewife. With determination, she saved enough to buy a sewing machine and began stitching blouses from home, though she struggled to earn a stable income. Things changed, however, when she joined a Women’s Self-Help Group supported by VST, which taught her to save, helped her access loans, and linked her with training programs in tailoring, embroidery, and jute bag making. With this support, Kavitha opened a small shop, hired an employee, and transformed her skills into a thriving business.
Today, Kavitha earns enough to provide her family with a good standard of living and is determined to ensure her daughter can pursue higher education. More importantly, Kavitha has become a mentor and trainer for other women, earning extra income while teaching six trainees each month. She dreams of expanding her business further and one day teaching at a technology college. Her journey shows how access to training, credit, and encouragement through Women’s Self-Help Groups can help women build independence — and then inspire the next generation to do the same.
