I hope all is well. It has been a great couple of months in the school in Perú.
The second half of the school year got back underway in Perú with the celebration of Arequipa Day when the students eat different local foods. Before the break the 20th Anniversary party in the school was held which involved plenty of folkloric dance and food with the students and their parents as well as past students who have continued their studies into secondary school and further and gained employment.
An extra special thanks as well goes to our local teacher Edy Luz who has been with us from the start!
To celebrate the end of the first half of the school year and the upcoming Independence Day the students undertook Día del Logro to present examples of what they have learned so far this year and their achievements. These included maths, grammar, historical figures and geography.
The 20th Anniversary Charity Challenge was undertaken in Colca Canyon, one of the world’s deepest, descending over 1,000m and ascending the same distance over two days covering 15 miles (25 kilometres) in total. It was definitely a challenge with very steep terrain and scary drop-offs on both trails with pre-dawn starts each day.
And finally we have been planting trees with the students in Guatemala (we can't plant trees where we work in the desert in Peru due to lack of rain). Each year we plant hundreds of trees around the communities with the students and their families to combat deforestation and also to cover our carbon footprint from our work in Latin America.
By purchasing the trees ourselves and planting them on land belonging to members of the communities we can ensure that the reforestation is being undertaken responsibly.
Thank you so much for all your continued support and have a great September. Don’t forget to check out next year’s 25th Phoenix Anniversary Charity Challenge in Ireland (follow the link below) - it would be great to see you there!
Cheers
