Al-Mustafa's Cleft Project aims to support high-quality, comprehensive, and long-term care for underprivileged children with congenital cleft lip and palate defects. Under this project, up to 1,000 Free Cleft Lip and Palate Surgeries are performed annually by Al-Mustafa Welfare Society. We have been providing free cleft surgeries for 18 years and have yet successfully performed 62,542 cleft surgeries at our hospitals and camps.
Cleft lip and palate are amongst the most common birth defects. According to estimates, annually approximate 9,000 children are born with this deformity in Pakistan. Children born with these conditions have difficulty breastfeeding and are often chronically malnourished. An untreated cleft can cause a speech impediment, as well as dental or middle ear problems. Even more tragically, the children and their mothers are often shunned by their families or society for this deformity.
At Al-Mustafa, we have been performing free Cleft Lip and Palate surgeries on suffering children from low-income families at Al-Mustafa Hospital and via camps across Pakistan since 2007. Along with the free surgery, the children are also provided speech therapy, dental, ENT, and psychological treatment. These surgeries are performed either at Al-Mustafa Hospital or in camps in organised across urban, suburban and rural areas of Pakistan.
Al-Mustafa's Cleft Project's prime is providing patients with the necessary surgeries. But we are also keen on different awareness-raising efforts through all sorts of print, electronic, digital, and other platforms with the provision of comprehensive cleft care treatments such as NAM, speech therapy, orthodontics, etc., and training of medical professionals. We also strive to aid in their socio-economic integration by encouraging the cleft children's enrollment in schools.
