Franzisca Vet Clinic:Help Us Help Them-Report XVII

Petya

Reporting Period: 01.07.2026 – 30.09.2026

Between July and September 2026, Animal Rescue Sofia kept doing what it has always done - standing by the stray animals of Bulgaria, who have no one else to turn to. “The Farm” shelter is the place where frightened, injured and forgotten dogs and cats from the streets are treated and comforted, also where they slowly learn to trust people again, and finally set off towards a home of their own.

None of this would be possible without you, the donors of Animal Rescue Sofia. Thanks to your support, from July to September 2026 Franzisca Veterinary Clinic admitted 325 dogs and cats for treatment, while our vets also cared for all the animals living at “The Farm”. A total of 3 594 manipulations, treatments and surgeries were performed – each one a step away from pain and towards a better life. Forty-six dogs and cats left us to start a new chapter with good and responsible owners.

Behind every number there is a story. Petya, Mama Corfu and her puppies Crete and Rhodes, Grandma Mira and Tailey are just a few of the animals whose lives you helped change during this reporting period.

Petya

Little Petya is a mountaineer – or at least, she was found in the mountains, and by mountaineers at that. A group of foreign hikers had come to enjoy the beauty of Bulgarian nature, and along the way they came across a tiny, injured puppy who would hardly have survived there on her own.

Petya had a broken leg. In young puppies fractured bones heal very quickly, often in the wrong position, so every single day counts and orthopedic surgery at this age is always urgent. There was simply no time to wait, so Petya was operated in a referral clinic and then came back to “The Farm” to recover. Instead of being alone and hurt in the mountains, she is now surrounded by care, with a soft bed, people who look after her, and her whole life ahead of her. Petya will soon be adopted in Germany.

Mama Corfu, Crete and Rhodes

We believe it is no coincidence that Mama Corfu and her two puppies – Crete, the little black girl, and Rhodes, the beige boy – are named after Greek islands.

Corfu is a petite lady, about two years old, with a gentle and delicate soul. She never pushes for attention and is kind to everyone, yet a little withdrawn. Once she realized that we were there to help her care for her little ones, something in her changed. The worried, exhausted mother, who had carried everything on her own, finally allowed herself to rest and be held in someone’s arms.

Crete and Rhodes are now big and no longer need their mother. Now it is Corfu’s turn. She is waiting for a pair of arms that will always be there for her – to cuddle her, to hold her leash on long walks, to keep her cared for and safe. She gave everything to her children; she deserves a family that will give everything to her, which she already found in Germany. The puppies are still waiting for their adopters at the shelter.

Grandma Mira

A happy ending looks different for everyone. For some, it is a loving home or a healthy body. For Grandma Mira, it is something much quieter. Mira has been homeless her whole life. The people living nearby fed her and looked after her, and thanks to their kindness she reached something very few stray dogs ever live to see - old age. But there comes a time when kindness from a distance is no longer enough. Mira needed safety and peace. Soft food, a warm blanket, a gentle hand on her head, an embrace. That is why she came to us.

Mira had a painful, ulcerated malignant tumour on her leg. Once our vets stabilized her, they amputated the affected limb. The frail old girl does not have many days left – and we wanted every one of them to be free of constant pain. Whatever time she has, she will spend it warm, safe and loved.

Tailey

Tailey came to us with an open wound where her tail used to be. It could have been torn off in an accident, or she could have done this to herself. Tailey keeps turning to the stump of her tail with an unhealthy interest, but it may simply be the pain that drives her to it.

The vets amputated the rest of the tail down to healthy tissue, and we hope that Tailey will soon overcome the infection and find some peace. In the meantime, we will give her comfort and care, and as much time as she needs to learn that human hands can be gentle.
