Empowering Student Nurses for Community Service

By Dean Sinco | Project Leader

The University’s core values of excellence, commitment, integrity and service has greatly affected the lives of students who passed the its hallowed pillars for the last 68 years.

But it is the core value of service that commonly triggers students' deep realizations and fuels them to share their acquired knowledge and put it into practice, as a contribution for the greater good of the community.

Foundation University College of Nursing has been aware of its essential role in molding student nurses to become persons of service.

Within the four years of stay at the college, they are not only taught theories and equipped with the right skills but the mentors never forget to inculcate the value of service – one essential factor of being a nursing practitioner.

Through the years, the college has been responsible in developing the sense of service in each of the student nurses.

But before sending off student nurses to the community, they are given trainings and activities that could better and make themselves aware of their personality and behavior. Such activities which will develop intrapersonal and interpersonal communication.

It is important for student nurses to be self-aware or simply, to know their strengths and more so, weaknesses in order for them to cope with the pressures, possible problems and difficulties to be encountered during the conduct their community service.

Through self-awareness activities, student nurses are in a way empowered to take on the responsibility they will soon hold as professional healthcare professionals who are of great relevance to the community.

Such trainings open the minds of student nurses to the realities of the world and thus, giving them an opportunity to think deeper and reconsider the results of their actions while being immersed in the community where they are called to serve and dedicate their efforts for the common good.
