At a time when education seems so estranged to the needs of the society, it is but high time to offer the courses that answer to the basic needs of the community especially in the healthcare services.
Nursing education in the Philippines has been patterned after international standards and Western trends and in effect, the programs produced nurses who can compete with the rest of the world.
But at the back of it, the aspect of relevance to the country’s context is sometimes left behind. When in fact, service to the community should be the prime goal of nursing education and not pure theory and that nurses should be advised that they must serve their country and help in the improvement of healthcare services up to the grassroots level.
Foundation University, in collaboration with the Technical Vocational Department and the College of Nursing, has ventured on offering relevant courses and competencies added to the degree program namely: Wellness Massage, Barangay Health Services, Pharmacy Services, Health Care Services, and Caregiving.
By way of these added offerings, the nursing graduates and professionals have an edge over others who come from other institutions. Training the nurses to be passionate about their work begins with their exposure to the community. Further realizations about their noble profession come into fruition due to their contact with the grassroots.
