Inculcating Service in Nursing Education

By Dean Sinco | Project Leader

One of the main goals of educating people is to be of service to the community. Knowledge when applied is wisdom but when shared, it finds more meaning for the whole humanity.

There is a challenge posed to educational institutions at present and it is on how to inculcate service and motivate the learners to utilize their degree for the good of the human race.

So at the start of the learning journey while in college, it is but fitting to incorporate the value of service and the fulfillment earned only in the service of those who are in dire need.

Foundation University College of Nursing, through its learning methods has never neglected to put into the curriculum the value of service for the student nurses. In doing so, education’s greatest goal is met.

Last month, the students from the FU College of Nursing assisted two medical missions, one in Dumaguete City with the Ohana Medical Missions, Inc. and the other in Bais City with the Negrenses del Oriental de Minessota.

Though tired and exhausted from the daylong task of assisting the doctors for the two medical missions, the students expressed their fulfillment and their appreciation of the degree they are pursuing. Deep realizations were conceived during the said activities in relation to their future careeer in healthcare service.

Through medical missions and other events, the value of service is promoted among student nurses. This will result to producing professional nurses who are serving with purpose and passion, and thus setting aside their self-centered ambitions.

At the end of the day, the nursing profession does not only require enough knowledge and right practice but it entails more than that, a nurse must have the heart to serve, to be of service to the greater community through the health care aspect.
