Enterprise ideas abound in Numbulwar!

By Laura Egan | CEO

Enterprise workshop

Laura and Tanya from ELP spent five days in Numbulwar in early January 2017, following a request for enterprise support from community elder Yulki. We meet many amazingly creative people, who are producing beautifully hand-crafted items. Everyone is very motivated to establish the Numburindi Arts Centre and begin an arts-based enterprise in Numbulwar.

ELP meet with the women from Numburindi Arts to workshop ideas for creative arts enterprise. Everyone contributed their vision for the Art Centre, management, governance and finances. We all created a pricing guide for selling baskets to wholesale customers and the public. It was a very exciting meeting, with lots of energy around producing more baskets and growing Numburini Art in 2017!

The Numbulwar Weavers are a talented group of women are weaving baskets from traditional pandanus and recycled Ghost Nets (abandoned fishing nets). The women have been making and selling the baskets but need support to make it a viable business.

“We want to have our own business, to run it.” Yulki

Along with weaving, there are a number of enterprise activities being planned - a pop-up Op Shop, a soap making workshop, jewelery making and pricing, and a local market is planned, proving a hands-on learning experience in mico-enterprise and a chance to market test different products.

ELP is working hard to access resources so we can continue to support the enterprising individuals of Numbulwar! There is so much potential, we look forward to being a part of this unfolding!
