Nathaniel's aspirations to help the young fellas of his community are fast becoming a reality, with “Speargrass Bike Tours” - Katherine, NT - days away from opening shop!
Nathaniel is passionate about helping others fulfill their dreams and potential, and with Indigenous unemployment in the Katherine region standing at 21%, this is no mean feat.
“There are smart young fellas here that want work that is meaningful and fun. Without work they’re bored, sitting at home doing nothing. I’m going to mentor young fellas, teach them how to fix bikes and run the shop. They’ll be involved in running tours and talking to customers. Over time they will grow confidence and knowledge and I will be there to support them when they’re ready to take a step towards starting their own enterprise!”
With access to ELP’s wide range of business services and individualised support, those involved will be assisted through each stage of their journey. The enterprise not only provides skills training and paid employment, but provides diversionary pathways for youth at risk of becoming involved in the criminal justice system.
Tanya from ELP has been working closely with Nathaniel and the team. “This idea highlights how creative and empowering responses can address the issues of unemployment and over incarceration. These young men are fast becoming role models for their peers and the local community. The impact this will have on the whole region will be huge.”
The dedicated Speargrass team have been engaged in training, market research and business development over the last two months. “About 5-7 young fellas are attending. They're coming every time and at the end of the day are feeling good about what they are doing.” Nathaniel says.
A training session with a Northern Territory bike expert was a pretty big highlight for the team and with 14 bikes on route to Katherine, Speargrass are ready to start hiring bikes to tourists within days. Further funds for professional first aid training are now needed before the team will guide cultural tours.
So why is it so important for Nathaniel to create jobs and training for these young fellas?
“It’s good to be a stepping stone and create a good environment for them. It shows them what life has offer. We all need a push to start something in life.”
Give Nathaniel a supportive push! Donate generously, keep him inspiring others and help these fellas get the training and ongoing business support they need to make Speargrass a success!
