In the past five month, we conducted a total of 80 trainings and trained 3,434 civilians in basic emergency response knowledge, stop-bleeding skills, and how to use a tourniquet. Among all 80 training courses, 22 courses (27.5%) were held outside of Taipei and New Taipei City (the Greater Taipei Area). The gender ratio between female and male is approximately 6:4, most of whom come because of the care of their families.
We would like to share a little bit about what we do in a Basic Training Course. We have done 33 of them in the past five month.
Basic Course
The participants will learn from professional first responders the fundamentals of emergency response and the importance of taking immediate action.
We begin the course by teaching the licensed material from the American College of Surgeons “STOP THE BLEED®”. The participants will be able to recognize and control life-threatening hemorrhage. They will learn and practice how to properly use a tourniquet, pressure bandage, and gauze in different kinds of hemorrhage situations. The fundamentals also include the composition of a “Go-Bag”, teaching emergency scene management principles “SMART”, and the sequence of treatment priorities “MARCH”.
Feedback from participants
“During peacetime, we rarely think of what may happen when the disaster strikes. However, it is very real! I never thought of the need for having a Go-Bag at home, but now I will put one together for my family. Also, I always thought that living in a metropolitan area, the ambulance is extremely accessible. I have learned that if someone has a massive bleed, he/she can go into shock in a very short time. The number one cause of preventable death after injury is bleeding. I realized that there are many more things I can do as a civilian, and I can take action to help others.”
“What I enjoy the most in the course is where I can get an actual practice with the trainer on my side. This allows me to learn better and put it in my muscle memory. Practice makes me better at it.”
“Thanks to all the FA staff, volunteers, and trainers! You have shown me the world of emergency response. I am sure this is just the beginning for me. I am looking forward to becoming part of the resilience forces.”
