Summary

Dunes are not solely sand. They are oasis of biodiversity, a crossing point where the three elements: sea, earth and wind create amazing shapes that with age turn into unique, but vulnerable ecosystems. Dunes are the spectacular complex of coastal areas and the surrounding nature - estuaries, forests, meadows and rocks. The dunes are the guardians of the coasts

Challenge

Dunes are still alive in the few places around the Black Sea coast in Bulgaria. They are the only home of many endangered species. In addition, they regulate erosion and protect settlements from the effects of sea storms and winds. Instead of being protected and maintained as particularly important territories, they are subject to constant investor pressure and are under ongoing threat of development and destruction.

Solution

Cleaning-up activities; restrictions to walk over the dune (e.g. installing signs and/or wooded pathways through the dune, landmark the dune); removal of not typical and invasive species, alongside restoration of species, that should be present in sand habitats, but are extinct, probably due to human pressure. Finally, may be establishing of a buffer area, where the dune can live and grow - by building facilities to retain the sand and its accumulation in certain places

Long-Term Impact

In the long term, we need to do various studies of wind and wave dynamics and model the behavior of the sand. This is a very complex and expensive process, but it can demonstrate that protecting the dunes is cheaper and easier than restoring them when we have already destroyed them and serve as an argument in nature protection Be part of the life of the dunes
