The number of families engaged in Rabbit breeding has reached the 500 mark. This was mainly achieved when two companies involved in value addition to process rabbit meat were involved in mobilization of farmers and families together with Kigezi Health Care Foundation. Every month a number of families sell rabbits and this encourages more families to engage in rabbit rearing and they also turn up in big numbers to attend training. We have started initiatives like introducing community Health Insurance schemes where people will bring live rabbits for premium. A number of community groups and religious institutions are mobilizing their members into rabbit breeding. Training of farmers now takes place every week. Rabbits mainly eat vegetation and this makes the feeding quite easy for women and Youth. It does not require a lot of time whereby young people can go to school and continue to rare rabbits. Women can still take care of children and the rest of the family members and still rare rabbits. We are also creating data base to capture the number of farmers and rabbits. We are also creating data base on the number of rabbits sold and eaten by the families. This project can easily be scaled up to other parts of the country and the countries in the region. We appeal to our friends and partners to support this project. It is now clear that this project can get many families out of poverty and significantly change livelihoods of vulnerable and marginalized people in our society.
